History of Bansko
Bansko is a unique small town in the skirts of Pirin Mountain. The town is among the best places in Bulgaria to come into contact with the medieval Bulgarian architecture and lifestyle- narrow paved streets, high and bulky stone walls, heavy gates and fortified houses.

Bansko is situated in an area of 32 archeological sites, more than 200 authentic houses from the Bulgarian Revival period, 7 museums and numerous cultural and historical monuments.

Museum houses and monuments tell the stories of Paisii Hilendarski - the author of the Bulgarian historic review, Neofit Rilski - the founder of Bulgarian secular education and Nikola Vaptsarov - a famous Bulgarian poet.

The three-nave church of Sveta Troitsa (1835) dominates the town with its impressive stone belfry - Bansko's symbol for more than a hundred years. The interior of the other church, Uspenie Bogorodichno (second half of the XVIII century), portrays the exceptional mastery of the Bansko Woodcarving School.

Climate and environment

More than two thirds of the all-seasons mountain resort of Bansko lies within the borders of Pirin National Park, which is a national reserve of 40 thousand hectares, included on UNESCO's List of World and Cultural Heritage.

The mountain has a major influence on the town climate. Winters are mild, but snowy and long. Summers are cool. Town temperature vary between -12 and 0 degrees Celsius in winter and between +25 and +35 degrees in summer.
